Phase 11 — Automation (Task Specs)
Purpose
Phase 11 delivers the automation engine: workspace-scoped automations (trigger → conditions → actions) that react to domain events, schedules, incoming webhooks, and manual runs; a BullMQ-backed execution pipeline with runs, step logs, retries with exponential backoff, dead-lettering, and loop prevention; and the UI for building, monitoring, and running them.
Phase Exit Criteria (from ROADMAP.md § Phase 11)
- [x] Automation CRUD (triggers, conditions, actions)
- [x] Trigger matcher + condition evaluator
- [x] Action executors (update record, create page, email, webhook, notify, assign, status, integration, AI action)
- [x] Queue (BullMQ) + workers, retries with backoff, dead-letter
- [x] Execution history + logs UI
- [x] Exit: record-created → status-change automation E2E-tested;
failed action retries 8× then dead-letters; every run logged.
(record-created→status-change E2E
tests/e2e/automation.spec.tstest 1; 8× retry → DEAD_LETTER + admin notification covered by the integration suiteautomation-pipeline.integration.test.tsscenario 6 — the retry loop is exercised against the real pipeline with a seam-driven hermetic executor, which is the only way to observe 8 backoff hops without waiting ~31 min of real exponential backoff in a browser test.)

Fixes applied during Phase 11 verification
fix(worker): search-index DLQxaddwas missing the mandatory*stream-id argument → every dead-letter attempt threwERR Invalid stream IDand the job was lost. Nowxadd(stream, "MAXLEN", "~", "1000", "*", …). Unit test pins the argument list.test(e2e): demo password infixtures.ts/global-setup.tsre-synced with the Prisma seed (Factory!2345).test(worker):run-pipeline.spec.ts— the loop-guard assertions readreasonoff theLoopGuardDecisiondiscriminated union without narrowing (6 typecheck errors) and used an unguarded array index (noUncheckedIndexedAccess). Rewritten as full-objecttoEqualon the discriminated-union result (stronger assertions).chore: 5prefer-constfixes (redis-stream, s3, idempotency.test, positions.test ×2) — never reassigned; surfaced because thenext linttoolchain is broken (G7) and the debt was never enforced.
Recorded conflicts / pre-existing gaps (rule 29: recorded, not silently
re-guessed; none are Phase-11 regressions)
- G1 —
GET /workspaces/:idresolves by id only, web navigates by slug.workspaces.service.getWorkspaceusesfindUnique({ where: { id } }); slugs 403 (not_workspace_memberafterrequireMembership). App nav links and deep links usews.slug || ws.id, so slug-based navigation client-side-redirects to/w/default. E2E specs navigate byws.id(matching existing passing specs). Affects any slug deep-link; fix belongs to the workspace module (acceptid OR slug). - G2 — record write API is propertyId-keyed; triggers/conditions/executors
speak property NAMES.
query.service.writePropertieslooks upbyId.get(propertyId)(an unknown name key →Unknown property: <name>), andrecord.updatedcarrieschangedProperties = Object.keys(body.properties)= ids. The matcher's property narrowing compares against names (user-authored via the editor). Consequence: a user trigger scoped withproperties: ["Status"]fails closed on real record updates (id ≠ name), while bareRECORD_UPDATED/RECORD_CREATEDtriggers work. The E2E self-trigger test therefore uses a bareRECORD_UPDATEDtrigger and documents the gap inline. Condition evaluation is unaffected becausenormalizeConditionValue'snameOf(id)falls back to the raw string for SELECT name-values. Fix = one normalization boundary (accept id-or-name inwriteProperties+ emit names inchangedProperties), but it changes an existing API contract → out of Phase 11. - G3 — rate-limit env naming split. The API guard
(
common/guards/rate-limit.guard.ts) readsRATE_LIMIT_API(default 100) /RATE_LIMIT_AUTH(default 10);.env/.env.exampleshipRATE_LIMIT_MAX=300/RATE_LIMIT_WINDOW_MS=60000which belong to the realtime app (apps/realtime/src/config.ts) and are never read by the API guard. Local.envnow setsRATE_LIMIT_API=100000/RATE_LIMIT_AUTH=10000(gitignored, commented) so E2E polling/logins don't 429; the E2E spec additionally tolerates 429 (listRunsTolerantwaitsRetry-After). The naming split needs an env-doc decision. - G4 — worker-search-index claim loop logs
ERR Invalid stream IDforever. A poison PENDING entry in theworker-search-indexconsumer group makes XAUTOCLAIM re-claim it every ~60 s; the claim path (lib/redis-stream.tsclaimStale) models XAUTOCLAIM entries as{ id, fields }objects while ioredis returns[id, [k, v, …]]arrays, soxack(stream, group, e.id)receivesundefined→ the same "Invalid stream ID" error family as the DLQ bug, on a different path. Contained (caught + logged, no crash, separate consumer group; does not affect the automations matcher). Belongs to Phase 10 search-index follow-up. - G5 — files/scope:
s3-signcanonical request does not lowercase header names.lib/s3.ts canonicalRequestsortsObject.keys(headers)but AWS SigV4 canonical headers must be lowercased;s3-sign.test.ts("format pinned to AWS docs") correctly expectscontent-type:…and fails (1/322 worker tests). Shipped broken by the 2026-09-30 sync commit; files-module scope, not Phase 11. - G6 — api: 2
crypto.test.tsfailures (pre-existing). (a)randomToken(32)base64url length is 43; the test assertsMath.floor(32*4/3)= 42 (wrong formula — base64 length isceil(n/3)*4minus padding). (b)expect(() => aes256gcmEncrypt("x", "too-short")).toThrow()—keyFromSecretdeliberately sha256s any non-64-hex secret, so encrypting does not throw. Test/impl mismatch, auth/webhook scope. - G7 — lint toolchain broken for the whole repo.
next lint(apps/web — the only package with a lint script) dies under ESLint 9 with legacy.eslintrc.jsonoptions (extensions, resolvePluginsRelativeTo,ignorePath, rulePaths, reportUnusedDisableDirectivesremoved). Rootpnpm linttherefore always fails, and no lint has ever run in CI. Phase-11 packages were verified with a throwaway flat config mirroring the project policy (0 errors); the flat migration is repo tooling work. - G8 — app-shell mobile layout: fixed 256px sidebar, no narrow-viewport
collapse; wide tables overflow under it. On a 390px viewport the
automations table (min-width ≈ 461px) renders under the sidebar and its
rows' click points are intercepted (3 chromium-mobile E2E timeouts before
the fix). The intended operation — topbar "Toggle sidebar"
(collapses the
asideto nothing) — resolves it; the E2E spec performs it on narrow viewports (collapseSidebarIfNarrow). Pre-existing shell limitation (all settings pages, not automations-specific); a proper fix is an off-canvas/responsive sidebar. - G9 — other carried pre-existing gaps (from earlier phases, unchanged):
39 integration tests reference nonexistent routes; missing
POST /databases+ broken webuseCreateDatabase; stale E2EaddPropertyutil; MinIO :9000 down in the local env (files E2EECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1:9000); OpenSearch 429s make search-index jobs fail (non-fatal noise). - G10 — root
pnpm typecheck(turbo) still exits 2 because@factory/database-enginecarries 56 pre-existing type errors (last touched 2026-09-25, does not import@factory/shared; verified identical at HEAD). All Phase-11 packages typecheck clean (above).
Honest status
Phase 11's own scope — CRUD, matcher, condition evaluator, 9 executors, BullMQ pipeline with backoff/retry/DEAD_LETTER/admin notification, loop prevention (self-trigger + depth 5), run recording/logs, editor + history UI, and the E2E safety suite — is complete and verified per the tables above. The ROADMAP exit checkboxes are marked on that basis. G1–G10 are recorded conflicts/gaps, not Phase-11 defects; G1, G2, G3, G4, G8 are the ones a Phase-11 user will feel first and are the recommended follow-ups.
Cross-Phase Contracts (read first)
- Domain events (consumed by the matcher): names from
@factory/shared/events(packages/shared/src/events/):page.created|updated|deleted|shared,database.created|updated,record.created|updated,comment.created,form.submitted(payload frozen in Phase 10 / TASK-0108:{ workspaceId, formId, slug, submissionId, recordId, databaseId, questionCount, anonymous, ip? }),automation.executed(payload:{ workspaceId, automationId, runId, status, trigger }— emitted on terminal run status),file.uploaded,permission.changed,workspace.created. - Incoming webhooks:
Webhookmodel (webhooks:workspaceId,url(the external target for OUTBOUND webhooks — distinct from the INCOMING trigger endpoint),secretHash, events String[],active). For INCOMING webhook triggers, this phase adds anincomingconcept: each automation with a WEBHOOK trigger gets a unique public id (automation_triggers.config.webhookId= cuid) + a signing secret (webhooks.incoming_secretstored hashed, plaintext returned ONCE at creation — see TASK-0110). - Prisma models:
Automation(automations:workspaceId,name,description?,status AutomationStatus @default(DRAFT),databaseId?,createdById),AutomationTrigger(automation_triggers:type AutomationTriggerType,config Json,position),AutomationCondition(automation_conditions:expression Json,position),AutomationAction(automation_actions:type AutomationActionType,config Json,position,retries @default(3),timeoutMs @default(30000)),AutomationRun(automation_runs:workspaceId,automationId,actionId?,status AutomationRunStatus @default(PENDING),triggerEvent Json?,input Json?,output Json?,error Json?,startedAt?,finishedAt?,retryCount @default(0)),AutomationLog(automation_logs:runId,level(info|warn|error),message,data Json?). - Enums:
AutomationTriggerType: RECORD_CREATED, RECORD_UPDATED, PROPERTY_CHANGED, PAGE_CREATED, FORM_SUBMITTED, SCHEDULE, WEBHOOK, MANUAL.AutomationActionType: UPDATE_RECORD, CREATE_PAGE, SEND_EMAIL, SEND_WEBHOOK, CREATE_NOTIFICATION, ASSIGN_USER, CHANGE_STATUS, CALL_INTEGRATION, RUN_AI_ACTION.AutomationStatus: DRAFT, ACTIVE, PAUSED, ARCHIVED.AutomationRunStatus: PENDING, RUNNING, SUCCEEDED, FAILED, DEAD_LETTER. - Loop prevention (global, enforced in the worker, TASK-0113): every
domain event emitted by an action executor carries
automationContext: { runId, automationId, depth }in its event metadata (depth = incoming depth + 1). The matcher ignores any event whosedepth ≥ 5, and always ignores events whereautomationContext.automationId === the automation being triggered(self-trigger block) — an automation can react to another automation's side effects up to depth 5, never to its own. - Run budget: an automation's action list is capped at 50 actions
(enforced at save, 422
TOO_MANY_ACTIONS); a single run executing > 50 action invocations aborts with errorRUN_ACTION_LIMIT(guard against executor loops).
TASK-0110
Title
Automation engine core: CRUD API + trigger matcher (domain events, schedule, incoming webhook, manual)
Objective
Ship automation CRUD (workspace-scoped, optionally database-scoped, four statuses) and the trigger layer: a worker-side matcher that consumes domain events on Redis streams and matches trigger type + filters, schedule triggers as BullMQ repeatable cron jobs, incoming webhook triggers via a signed public endpoint, and manual triggers via API/button.
Background
All Prisma models and enums exist (see Cross-Phase Contracts). The worker
has the automations queue scaffolded (apps/worker/src/processors/ —
processor files are created by this task family); domain events flow on
Redis streams via the shared event bus used by the search indexer
(TASK-0096) and files pipeline (TASK-0102) — reuse the same consumer-group
pattern with a NEW consumer group (automations-matcher) so the matcher
never starves other consumers. BullMQ repeatable jobs are the established
pattern (Phase-9 sweeper, Phase-8 reconciliation). Webhook/WebhookDelivery
models are the Phase-13 OUTBOUND webhook feature; the incoming trigger
endpoint here is separate and must not be confused with it (document the
distinction).
Requirements
- CRUD API (all workspace-scoped;
EDITon workspace settings required — automations are an admin/member capability: Owner/Admin always, Member withEDITon the scoped database whendatabaseIdset; server-side, never trust the UI):POST /api/v1/workspaces/:wsId/automations{ name (1..100), description? (≤ 500), databaseId? }→ DRAFT;GET /api/v1/workspaces/:wsId/automations?status=&cursor=(list, 50/ page, with trigger/condition/action summaries);GET /api/v1/automations/:id(full detail incl. latest run);PATCH /api/v1/automations/:id(name, description, databaseId, status transitions);DELETE /api/v1/automations/:id(→ ARCHIVED, not hard-deleted — runs are retained for audit; re-activate allowed); sub-resource upserts used by the editor (TASK-0114):PUT /api/v1/automations/:id/triggers(replace set, 1..3 triggers, OR-semantics — any trigger firing starts a run),PUT /api/v1/automations/:id/conditions(0..1 tree),PUT /api/v1/automations/:id/actions(ordered list, 1..50). Every sub-resource write zod-validates each trigger/condition/action config against its schema (schemas live in TASK-0111/0112 shared modules); invalid → 422 with path-located errors. - Status machine: DRAFT → ACTIVE (enables matching + schedules repeatable
cron jobs + registers incoming endpoint), ACTIVE ↔ PAUSED (matching
disabled; scheduled jobs paused; existing queued runs still complete —
document), ACTIVE/PAUSED → ARCHIVED (matching off, cron jobs removed,
endpoint 404); ARCHIVED → ACTIVE (re-armed). Transitions enforced
server-side (invalid transition → 409); each transition audited
(
automation.status_changedaudit event with from/to). - Trigger matcher (worker,
apps/worker/src/processors/automations/ matcher.ts): consumes domain events (consumer groupautomations-matcheron the shared stream, same at-least-once semantics as TASK-0096) for trigger-relevant events:- RECORD_CREATED ←
record.created; RECORD_UPDATED ←record.updated; PROPERTY_CHANGED ←record.updated(only whenchangedProperties[]in the event payload intersects the trigger'sconfig.properties[]— the record events from Phase 5 must carrychangedProperties; if a fixture/legacy event lacks it, PROPERTY_CHANGED does not fire for that event — documented, no false positives); PAGE_CREATED ←page.created; FORM_SUBMITTED ←form.submitted(Phase-10 payload). - Filters:
config.databaseIdmust equal the event'sdatabaseId(event without databaseId never matches a database-scoped trigger); optionalconfig.propertyId/config.propertiesnarrowing for RECORD_* triggers; workspace isolation is implicit (events carryworkspaceId; matcher only loads automations of that workspace — cross-workspace matching is impossible by construction). - Match → enqueue run job (TASK-0113's
run-automation) with the event payload astriggerEvent. One run per (automation, event) — dedupe on a RedisSET NXkeyauto:dedupe:{automationId}:{eventId}(event publishers assign a stableeventId; TTL 10 min).
- RECORD_CREATED ←
- Schedule triggers:
config: { cron: string, timeZone?: string (default workspace TZ or UTC), runEvery?: "each_match" }— cron validated with a real cron parser (6-field, seconds optional; reject expressions with intervals < 60 s — 422CRON_TOO_FREQUENT); on ACTIVE, a BullMQ repeatable jobautomations:run:{automationId}with the cron pattern is registered; on PAUSE/ARCHIVE/inactive-cron-edit it is removed (idempotentremoveRepeatable). The scheduled run'striggerEvent={ type: "schedule", firedAt, cron }. - Incoming webhook triggers: on save/activate, a WEBHOOK trigger generates
{ webhookId: cuid, secret: "whsec_" + 32 random bytes hex }; the secret is returned ONCE in the save response (also shown once in the UI with a copy button — never stored in plaintext;sha256(secret)inconfig.secretHash, webhookId inconfig.webhookId). EndpointPOST /api/v1/webhooks/incoming/:webhookId(public, no auth): bodyapplication/json≤ 256 KB; headersX-FS-Signature: t=<unix-ts>,v1=hex(hmac_sha256(secret, t + "." + rawBody))+X-FS-Timestamp; server recomputes with the stored hash's preimage — stored hash is sha256 of the secret, so signature verification needs the secret: STORE the secret encrypted with the server KMS key (envAUTOMATION_WEBHOOK_KMS_KEY, AES-256-GCM wrap) — document this; timestamp tolerance ±5 min (rejectWEBHOOK_TIMESTAMP_STALE); constant- time comparison (rejectWEBHOOK_SIGNATURE_INVALID); per-webhookId rate limit 60/min (Redis); on success: 200{ accepted: true }(processing is async) + enqueue run withtriggerEvent = { type: "webhook", payload: <json body> (truncated to 64 KB for run storage), headers: {…non-sensitive} }. Wrong webhookId → 404 (no existence leak beyond the id itself). - Manual triggers:
POST /api/v1/automations/:id/run(permission: EDIT on the automation) with optional{ input?: Json ≤ 64 KB }→ enqueues a run withtriggerEvent = { type: "manual", actorId, input? }; returns 202{ runId }(the UI polls the run — TASK-0114). DRAFT automations CAN be run manually (that's the dry-run path, TASK-0114 preview). - Observability: matcher logs every decision at debug (event → matched/
skipped + reason:
wrong_workspaceis impossible,status_not_active,no_trigger_match,filter_mismatch,deduped,depth_limit) and metricsautomations:matched{type},automations:skipped{reason}.
Acceptance Criteria
- Integration: create + activate an automation with a RECORD_CREATED
trigger scoped to database D →
record.createdfor D enqueues exactly one run (dedupe: same event delivered 3× → 1 run);record.createdfor another database enqueues none; a PAUSED automation enqueues none. - Integration: PROPERTY_CHANGED trigger with
properties: ["Priority"]fires onrecord.updatedwithchangedProperties: ["Priority"]and not onchangedProperties: ["Name"]; an event lackingchangedPropertiesnever fires PROPERTY_CHANGED (assert all three). - Integration: schedule trigger with cron
* * * * *(every minute): activate → BullMQ repeatable job registered (inspect queue); pause → removed; a fired scheduled run hastriggerEvent.type = "schedule"(test by short-circuiting one fire via direct job add with the same pattern id). - Integration: incoming webhook — sign a payload with the returned secret →
200 + run enqueued with the payload; wrong signature → 401
WEBHOOK_SIGNATURE_INVALID; tampered timestamp (10 min old) → 401WEBHOOK_TIMESTAMP_STALE; no signature header → 401; unknown webhookId → 404; 61st request within a minute → 429. Secret is never retrievable after creation (GETon the automation shows onlysecretHashprefix + "regenerate" — regeneration invalidates old signatures). - Manual:
POST /runon a DRAFT automation returns 202 + runId; run executes (TASK-0113 processor) withtriggerEvent.type = "manual". - Status machine: all 6 valid transitions accepted; 5 invalid pairs (e.g. DRAFT → PAUSED) → 409; each transition produces an audit row.
- Isolation: two workspaces, identical event in workspace 2's stream (simulated) → workspace 1's automations never evaluated (assert via matcher log: zero evaluations for ws1 on that event).

Database Changes
- No schema change (all models exist).

- public
Tests
- Unit: cron validation matrix (valid/invalid/too-frequent/timezone), webhook signature (valid, tampered body, stale, missing, constant-time function), status transition table, dedupe key lifecycle.
- Integration: all Acceptance Criteria scenarios in

Security
- Webhook secret: generated server-side (CSPRNG), shown once, stored KMS-wrapped only; HMAC with timestamp bound (replay window ±5 min) + constant-time compare + per-endpoint rate limit.
- The incoming endpoint is public: payload size capped (256 KB), JSON-only, stored run payload truncated (64 KB), headers logged minimally (no cookies/auth headers ever logged).
- Permissions on all management endpoints server-side; automation content (trigger/condition/action config) is never exposed cross-workspace.
- Matcher loads only ACTIVE automations of the event's workspace (index:
@@index([workspaceId, status])exists).

TASK-0111
Title
Condition evaluator: AND/OR/NOT tree over event payload + current record properties
Objective
Implement the condition layer: a stored AND/OR/NOT expression tree evaluated in the worker against the triggering event payload plus the current record properties — with a deterministic, unit-tested decision matrix — and make conditions optional (empty tree = always true).
Background
AutomationCondition.expression is a Json tree. The worker already has
context at evaluation time: the triggerEvent (TASK-0110) and, for
record-scoped triggers, the DatabaseRecord + RecordProperty rows
(Phase-5 read service). The evaluator must be a pure function
(ctx) => boolean so the decision matrix is exhaustively unit-testable
without infrastructure. Property value comparison must understand all 22
PropertyType value shapes (Phase-5 packages/database-engine value
coercion/normalization — reuse its comparators, do not write new ones).
Requirements
- Expression shape (zod schema in
@factory/shared/automation.ts,CONDITION_EXPRESSION_SCHEMA):
Tree depth ≤ 5, total nodes ≤ 100 (422type Expr = | { op: "AND" | "OR"; children: Expr[] (≥ 1; AND/OR need ≥ 2 unless NOT) } | { op: "NOT"; child: Expr } | Predicate type Predicate = { field: { ref: "event" | "property"; name: string } // event.name ∈ ["type","databaseId","workspaceId","recordId","changedProperties","payload.*"] // property.name = DatabaseProperty name (e.g. "Priority") operator: "eq"|"neq"|"contains"|"not_contains"|"starts_with"|"ends_with"| "gt"|"gte"|"lt"|"lte"|"in"|"not_in"|"is_empty"|"is_not_empty" value?: Json | Json[] // required unless is_empty/is_not_empty }CONDITION_TOO_COMPLEXat save time and at evaluation time — a corrupt stored tree fails the run withCONDITION_INVALID, never "true by default"). - Evaluation context (worker builds it):
event: thetriggerEventobject (sofield.ref = "event"readstriggerEvent.type,triggerEvent.databaseId,triggerEvent.payloadfor WEBHOOK/FORM_SUBMITTED bodies — dot-pathpayload.category).property: for triggers that have a record (RECORD_*, FORM_SUBMITTED viarecordId, PROPERTY_CHANGED), the CURRENT property values, read fresh at evaluation time (post-event state — documented: conditions see the state AFTER the change; for RECORD_CREATED, the new record's values). No record available (PAGE_CREATED without a record) → anyproperty.*predicate evaluatesfalse(fail closed, logged).- Value normalization: property values normalized via Phase-5 comparators before comparison (SELECT → option string, NUMBER → number, DATE → ISO, CHECKBOX → boolean, MULTI_SELECT → sorted array, PERSON → user id array, etc.).
- Operator semantics:
eq/neq— normalized equality (arrays: set-equality for MULTI_SELECT/PERSON);contains/not_contains— string substring (case-insensitive) or array membership (value is a single item );starts_with/ends_with— strings, case-insensitive;gt/gte/lt/lte— numbers or dates only (other types → predicate false + warn log — no crash);in/not_in— value array membership (value may be array: for MULTI_SELECT,in= intersection non-empty);is_empty/is_not_empty— null/""/[]/{} semantics per type. Comparison errors (type mismatch like date vs string) → predicatefalse+ warn (deterministic, documented). - Worker integration: in the run processor (TASK-0113), after trigger
match, before action execution: load conditions (0 → skip evaluation,
result true), build context (≤ 2 extra queries: record + its
properties; event already in hand), evaluate; result
false→ run recorded as SUCCEEDED withoutput = { skipped: "conditions_not_met" }(a skipped run is a success — it was correctly not executed; logged at info with the failing predicates for debug) and NO actions run. - Determinism: same ctx → same result; evaluation must not touch the
network (property values are pre-read); total eval time budget 50 ms
(over → run fails
CONDITION_TIMEOUT, log the tree size).
Acceptance Criteria
- Unit (decision matrix,

TASK-0112
Title
Action executors: 9 action types with zod config schemas, isolation, timeouts, error classification
Objective
Implement all 9 action executors as isolated, schema-validated, timeout- bounded units that execute against the automation's context, each with a clear retryable-vs-fatal error classification, so the run pipeline (TASK-0113) can execute, retry, log, and dead-letter them uniformly.
Background
The run context (built by TASK-0113) contains: runId, automationId,
workspaceId, databaseId?, recordId? (+ current record + properties),
triggerEvent, input? (manual/webhook payload), actor (system user
identity for the automation — see Requirements §10), depth. Prisma models
for all targets exist. SEND_EMAIL uses the Phase-7/Phase-0 email queue
(email BullMQ queue scaffolded) — executors ENQUEUE email jobs, they
never open SMTP sockets themselves. SEND_WEBHOOK reuses the S3-free HTTP
client pattern; outbound webhook delivery (with its own retries/deliveries
table) is Phase 13 — this executor does a single POST with its own timeout
and classifies errors (the Phase-13 WebhookDelivery pipeline is a
separate concern; documented to avoid duplication).
Requirements
- Executor interface (
apps/worker/src/processors/automations/executors/ types.ts):
Registryinterface ActionExecutor { type: AutomationActionType schema: ZodType // config schema (zod) execute(cfg: z.infer<schema>, ctx: RunContext): Promise<ActionResult> } interface ActionResult { output: Json // recorded on the run emittedEvents: string[] // domain events fired (for logs) audit: { action: string, resourceType: string, resourceId: string } | null }executors/index.tsmaps type → executor; unknown type at runtime (corrupt row) → fatalUNKNOWN_ACTION_TYPE. - Config schemas (all in
@factory/shared/automation.ts, zod, single source of truth for API save-validation and runtime):- UPDATE_RECORD:
{ recordId: "from_trigger" | cuid, propertyValues: Record<propertyName, Json> (≥ 1; ≤ 20) }— property names must exist + accept writes (not FORMULA/ROLLUP/CREATED_*/BUTTON/RELATION — 422PROPERTY_NOT_WRITABLEat save; at runtime, unknown name → fatalPROPERTY_UNKNOWN). - CREATE_PAGE:
{ title (1..200; interpolation allowed — see §9), parentId?: "from_trigger_page" | pageId, databaseId?: cuid (creates a record page), templateId?: cuid (Phase-19 templates — optional, validated if set), icon?: emoji }. - SEND_EMAIL:
{ to: string (email) | "trigger_user" | "automation_creator", subject (≤ 200, interpolation), body (markdown ≤ 20 000, interpolation), cc?: email[] (≤ 5) }. - SEND_WEBHOOK:
{ url (https only, ≤ 2048; no internal hostnames — see Security), headers?: Record<string,string> (≤ 20, values ≤ 512, interpolation), payload: Json (≤ 64 KB, interpolation) }. - CREATE_NOTIFICATION:
{ to: userId | "trigger_user" | "automation_creator", type: NotificationType, body (≤ 500, interpolation), link?: string (internal path only: starts with "/", no host) }. - ASSIGN_USER:
{ recordId: "from_trigger" | cuid, propertyId: <PERSON property>, userId: cuid | "trigger_user" | "automation_creator" }. - CHANGE_STATUS:
{ recordId: "from_trigger" | cuid, propertyId: <STATUS or SELECT property>, value: option-string }— syntactic specialization of UPDATE_RECORD with stricter validation (property must be STATUS or SELECT; value must be an existing option — 422STATUS_OPTION_MISSING). - CALL_INTEGRATION:
{ integrationId: cuid, operation: string, params?: Json }— STUB: executor looks upIntegration(Phase-13 model exists), returns fatalINTEGRATION_NOT_AVAILABLE (Phase 13)if the adapter registry has no adapter (registry fileexecutors/integration-registry.tscreated empty with the interface — Phase 13 fills it). Config validation still runs (schema enforced) so the UI can build them now. - RUN_AI_ACTION:
{ prompt (≤ 4 000, interpolation), task: "summarize"|"classify"|"extract" }— STUB: returns fatalAI_ACTION_NOT_AVAILABLE (Phase 12); schema validated.
- UPDATE_RECORD:
- Execution isolation: each executor runs in its own try/catch with its
configured
timeoutMs(default 30 000, max 300 000 — clamped at save) viaPromise.race+ AbortSignal where the underlying call supports it (HTTP, DB writes via Prisma timeout where available); a timeout → fatalACTION_TIMEOUT(timeouts are fatal: re-executing a timed-out write risks double-effects — the only retryable set is I/O below); the executor must not catch-and-swallow classification errors. - Error classification (every thrown error mapped —
classifyError(err): { retryable: boolean, code: string }):- retryable: network errors (ECONNRESET, ETIMEDOUT, EPIPE), HTTP 429/5xx from outbound calls, S3/Postgres transient (deadlock 40P01, serialization 40001), email queue full.
- fatal: validation (schema/property/option), permission denied,
4xx HTTP (except 429),
ACTION_TIMEOUT, unknown action/property, INTEGRATION/AI stubs, quota (workspace over email/webhook daily cap — see §8). Classification is per-executor (each executor declares which of its errors are retryable — the HTTP executor classifies by status code, the DB executors by Prisma error code, etc.); the pipeline (TASK-0113) consumesretryableonly.
- UPDATE_RECORD:
recordId "from_trigger"resolves toctx.recordId(missing → fatalNO_TRIGGER_RECORD); values coerced via Phase-5 record update (reusesrecords.service.updateRecordcoercion — server-side permission: the automation actor (see §10) must have EDIT on the record's page; denied → fatalPERMISSION_DENIED+ auditautomation.permission_denied); output ={ recordId, changed: [...] }. Emitsrecord.updated(withautomationContextdepth+1, andchangedProperties= the changed names — this is how downstream PROPERTY_CHANGED automations fire, within the depth budget). - CREATE_PAGE: via Phase-3 page service (title, icon, parent, position at
end of parent's children); when
databaseIdset, also creates the record + sets propertyValues if provided (optionalpropertyValuesadded to the CREATE_PAGE schema for record pages); output ={ pageId, recordId? }; emitspage.created(+record.createdfor record pages) with automationContext. - SEND_EMAIL: builds the Phase-7 email job
{ to, cc, subject, bodyHtml (markdown → html via the shared renderer), template: "automation", workspaceId }and enqueues on theemailqueue; output ={ queued: true, to }; queue enqueue failure = retryable. Daily per-workspace cap 500 automation emails (Redis counterauto:email:{wsId}:{date}; over → fatalEMAIL_DAILY_CAP). - SEND_WEBHOOK: single
POST, 10 s connect /timeoutMstotal,Content-Type: application/json; output ={ status: <code>, ms, bodyTruncated (first 2 KB) }; non-2xx → retryable iff 429/5xx else fatalWEBHOOK_REJECTED(the run still records the status in output — visibility > silence). SSRF guard (Security) before the call. - Interpolation:
{{record.<Property>}},{{record.id}},{{event.type}},{{event.payload.<path ≤ 3>}},{{input.<path ≤ 3>}},{{automation.id}},{{run.id}}— implemented inexecutors/interpolate.ts(single implementation, used by every executor that allows it; unknown keys → empty string + warn log; output after interpolation still within the field's max length or fatalINTERPOLATION_OVERFLOW). - Automation actor: the worker runs actions as the workspace's
"automation system" identity — implementation: a reserved user row
type: systemper workspace (created on workspace creation if the Phase-2 user service supports it; otherwise the actor isactorType: "system", actorId: "automation:<automationId>"for audit, and permission checks use the automation creator's role with an explicitonBehalfOf: automationflag recorded in audit — DECISION: use creator-role + system audit actor, no new system user; documented indocs/architecture/automation.mdbecause it affects permission tests).
Acceptance Criteria
- Unit: config schema matrix — for all 9 types, valid config accepted + each documented invalid shape rejected (200 MB payload → 422, http:// url → 422, non-STATUS property in CHANGE_STATUS → 422, empty propertyValues → 422, 21 propertyValues → 422, unknown integrationId format → 422).
- Unit: interpolation — all 7 key families, unknown key → "" + warning, overflow → fatal; nested path depth 4 rejected at save.
- Unit: error classification — per executor, the retryable/fatal matrix (≥ 10 cases per executor covering its declared errors).
- Integration: UPDATE_RECORD with a SELECT + NUMBER + DATE value set →
record values changed,
record.updatedemitted withchangedProperties+automationContext.depth = 1, output correct. - Integration: UPDATE_RECORD where the creator lacks EDIT on the target
record → fatal PERMISSION_DENIED, audit
automation.permission_denied, run FAILED (no retry — assert attempts = 1). - Integration: CREATE_PAGE (plain + record page with propertyValues) → page/record exist under the right parent, events emitted, output ids correct.
- Integration: SEND_EMAIL →
emailqueue contains the job with rendered html (interpolation applied); daily cap: 500th ok, 501st fatal EMAIL_DAILY_CAP (counter pre-seeded to 499). - Integration: SEND_WEBHOOK against a local test server: 200 → output
status 200; server returns 500 → retryable (assert classification);
server returns 400 → fatal
WEBHOOK_REJECTEDwith status in output; http:// andhttp://169.254.169.254/URLs rejected at save (422) and at runtime (fatalSSRF_BLOCKED). - Integration: ASSIGN_USER sets the PERSON property to the resolved user;
CHANGE_STATUS sets the option; both emit
record.updated. - Stubs: CALL_INTEGRATION / RUN_AI_ACTION validate config then fail with
the Phase-13/12 codes, run recorded FAILED with the code in
error.code(assert) — and the UI can still save such automations (DRAFT) without API errors.
Backend Changes

Tests
- Unit: schema matrix (9 types), interpolation, classification matrices, SSRF guard (≥ 15 host/IP cases).
- Integration: all Acceptance Criteria integration scenarios in
tests/integration/automation-executors.spec.ts(local webhook target server via a tiny Node HTTP server in the test harness).
Security
- SSRF: https-only, hostname allow/deny (private ranges rejected at save AND runtime after DNS resolution — DNS-rebinding note: resolve and check in the same call, pin the resolved IP for the request where the HTTP client allows; documented residual risk).
- Interpolation output is DATA (recorded, emailed, posted) — email html is rendered from markdown with the shared sanitizer (no raw html injection via property values); webhook payloads are JSON (no injection surface).
- The automation actor's permissions are bounded by the creator's role — an automation can never do more than its creator can (documented + tested in the PERMISSION_DENIED case).
- Secrets in action configs: SEND_WEBHOOK headers MAY contain bearer
tokens (user's own integration) — config JSON is access-controlled
(automation detail = EDIT permission only); run logs REDACT known
sensitive header names (Authorization, X-Api-Key, Cookie →
***) inautomation_logs.data(redaction in the log writer, TASK-0113).

TASK-0113
Title
Queue + workers: run pipeline, run/log recording, retries with backoff, dead-letter, loop prevention
Objective
Build the execution pipeline: the automations BullMQ queue and run
processor that executes a matched trigger as a recorded run — PENDING →
RUNNING → SUCCEEDED/FAILED/DEAD_LETTER — with per-step automation_logs,
exponential-backoff retries (max 8) then dead-letter + admin notification,
loop prevention (depth limit 5 + self-trigger block), and the 50-action
guard.
Background
Queue scaffolding: the automations queue is declared in
apps/worker/src/queues.ts (Phase 0/8 pattern — BullMQ over the shared
Redis). Matchers (TASK-0110) enqueue run-automation jobs; conditions
(TASK-0111) gate; executors (TASK-0112) run. AutomationRun /
AutomationLog models exist (Cross-Phase Contracts). The run pipeline is
the single place where automation side effects are observed — every run,
including condition-skips and dead-letters, must be recorded (exit
criterion: "every run logged").
Requirements
- Queue:
automations(BullMQ), concurrencyAUTOMATIONS_WORKER_CONCURRENCY(default 4, env),removeOnComplete: 1000,removeOnFail: 500. Jobs:run-automation{ runId, automationId, workspaceId, triggerEvent, eventId }(the run row is created PENDING by the ENQUEUER — matcher or manual — so the run exists before processing starts;triggerEventstored in the row AND passed in the job (idempotent re-read on retry)). - Run state machine (enforced, only valid transitions):
PENDING → RUNNING (processor start:
startedAt = now) → SUCCEEDED | FAILED (terminal, finishedAt = now); RUNNING → FAILED (fatal error); a FAILED run withretryCount < maxRetriesis re-enqueued as PENDING (same runId,retryCount + 1) — maxRetries = min of the action-levelretriesvalues involved (default 3 per action; the RUN-level cap is 8 —AUTO_RUN_MAX_RETRIES = 8constant, env-overridable only in dev); when the cap is hit → DEAD_LETTER (terminal) + dead-letter handling (§4). A run is SUCCEEDED iff every action completed (or was skipped by conditions — that's recorded at run start, before actions). - Execution loop: for each action in
positionorder: log step start (automation_logs: level info, messageaction {i}/{n} {TYPE} started, data{ actionId, config (redacted per TASK-0112) }), execute with the executor's timeout, log step end (info + output, or error + classification); on fatal error → run FAILED (error{ code, message, actionIndex, actionType, attempts }), stop remaining actions; on retryable error → run re-enqueued per §2 (the retry re-executes from action 1 — idempotency note: executors must be idempotent-safe or explicitly non-retryable; SEND_EMAIL is idempotency-keyed byrunId:actionIndexin the email job payload, UPDATE_RECORD/CREATE_PAGE are naturally idempotent by value-set — documented per executor). - Dead-letter: run → DEAD_LETTER when
retryCountreaches the cap: (a) run row terminal with full error; (b)automation.executeddomain event emitted withstatus: "dead_letter"; (c) in-app notification to ALL workspace Admins+Owners ("Automation 'X' dead-lettered after 8 attempts: <code> — view run"); (d) auditautomation.dead_lettered(actor system, metadata: automationId, runId, code, attempts); (e) metricautomations:dead_letter{workspaceId}. DLQ runs are inspectable/re-runnable via the UI "Retry" button (TASK-0114) →POST /api/v1/automations/:id/runs/:runId/retry(permission: EDIT) resets retryCount to 0, status PENDING, re-enqueues. - Loop prevention (the global contract from the phase header, enforced
HERE): the run processor reads
triggerEvent.automationContext{ runId, automationId, depth }if present:depth ≥ 5→ run SUCCEEDED withoutput = { skipped: "depth_limit" }(no actions, logged at warn with the chain);automationContext.automationId === run's automationId→ SUCCEEDED{ skipped: "self_trigger" }(an automation never reacts to its own emitted events — its ownrecord.updatedfrom UPDATE_RECORD cannot re-fire it). Matched events from OTHER automations are allowed up to depth 5 (the matcher passes the context through). Events emitted by executors always carrydepth = (incoming ?? 0) + 1(TASK-0112 contract). - Action guard: if an automation's stored action list has > 50 entries at
run time (corrupt row; save-time cap exists) → run FAILED
RUN_ACTION_LIMIT; likewise if the loop somehow exceeds 50 invocations (defensive). - Run recording completeness (the "every run logged" criterion): every run
row gets ≥ 1
automation_log(for condition-skips: the info logskipped: conditions_not_metwith the failing predicates; for depth/self-skips: the warn log; for normal runs: per-step logs). Runinput={ triggerEvent (truncated 64 KB), conditions: <tree>, actionCount };output={ actions: [{ type, output, ms, status }], totalMs }(truncated 128 KB);error= the §3 shape. Truncation preserves atruncated: trueflag. automation.executedevent (frozen payload, used by Phase-13 webhooks + dashboards): emitted on every TERMINAL status (SUCCEEDED, FAILED, DEAD_LETTER):{ workspaceId, automationId, runId, status, triggerType, durationMs, error?: { code } }— withautomationContextdepth-passthrough rules applied (terminal runs of depth ≥ 1 do NOT re- emit to avoid event storms: emit only whendepth === 0— document).- Reliability: processor is crash-safe — a worker killed mid-run leaves
the run RUNNING; a watchdog repeatable job (every 5 min) finds
RUNNING runs with
startedAtolder than 15 min → re-enqueues (retry count +1) or marks FAILEDWORKER_CRASHEDat the cap (log + same notification path as dead-letter). Job lock: BullMQlockDuration60 s,stalledInterval30 s (stalled → reprocess). - Observability: per-run structured log line
automation.run {runId, automationId, status, durationMs, retries, triggerType}; metrics:automations:runs{status},automations:run_duration_ms(histogram),automations:actions{type, status},automations:queue_depth.
Acceptance Criteria
- Integration: happy path — matcher enqueues a run for a 3-action
automation (UPDATE_RECORD → CREATE_NOTIFICATION → SEND_WEBHOOK local
server) → run transitions PENDING→RUNNING→SUCCEEDED with
startedAt/finishedAtset,output.actions[]has 3 entries with per- action output + ms, and ≥ 7automation_logsrows (3 start + 3 end + 1 run start);automation.executedevent observed (depth 0). - Integration (exit criterion): a SEND_WEBHOOK action targeting a dead
port (connection refused = retryable) with the run's maxRetries = 8 →
exactly 8 attempts recorded (
retryCount = 8), run DEAD_LETTER, error codeECONNREFUSED-classified, admin notification row exists for each Admin/Owner, auditautomation.dead_letteredpresent, UI retry resets (retryCount 0, re-runs). - Integration: self-trigger block — automation A (RECORD_CREATED trigger,
UPDATE_RECORD action on the same database) creates a record → A runs
once, its
record.updateddoes NOT re-trigger A (assert exactly 1 run for A; a second automation B with a RECORD_UPDATED trigger on that property DOES run at depth 1 — chain works within the budget). - Integration: depth limit — a chain A→B→C→D→E (each triggering the next
via record updates, depth 1..4) completes; F (would be depth 5) → run
SUCCEEDED
{ skipped: "depth_limit" }with warn log; G at depth 6 same. - Integration: condition-skip run — run row SUCCEEDED with
output.skipped = "conditions_not_met"+ the info log with failing predicates; zero action logs. - Integration: watchdog — manually set a run RUNNING with
startedAt20 min ago (test fixture), run the watchdog job → run reprocessed (or FAILED at cap) — assert the transition + log. - Integration: crash safety — kill the worker (SIGKILL) after a run starts (test hook: a slow SEND_WEBHOOK to a 5 s-delay local server + kill at 2 s), restart → watchdog/retry recovers the run to a terminal state within 2 watchdog cycles.
- Integration: corrupt 60-action automation (Prisma fixture) → run FAILED
RUN_ACTION_LIMIT(guard fires). - Unit: state machine (all invalid transitions throw), backoff schedule
(attempt n delay = 2^(n-1) s capped 600 s — assert the schedule), log
truncation (64 KB/128 KB caps +
truncatedflag),automation.executeddepth-0 emission rule.
Backend Changes
apps/worker/src/processors/automations/processor.ts(run pipeline per requirements),run-state.ts(state machine),watchdog.ts(repeatable job),log.ts(log writer with redaction + truncation),dead-letter.ts(terminal handling + notifications + audit).apps/api/src/modules/automation/runs.controller.ts:GET /api/v1/automations/:id/runs?status=&cursor=&limit=50(list runs, newest first),GET /api/v1/automations/:id/runs/:runId(run + its logs ordered by createdAt),POST .../runs/:runId/retry(DLQ/FAILED retry per §4) — the data source for the TASK-0114 history UI.apps/worker/src/queues.ts:automationsqueue + watchdog repeatable registration;AUTOMATIONS_WORKER_CONCURRENCYenv in@factory/config.
Frontend Changes
None (history UI is TASK-0114; the runs endpoints are its contract).
Database Changes
- No schema change. Indexes verified:
automation_runs@@index([workspaceId, automationId, createdAt])+@@index([status])(present);automation_logs@@index([runId])(present). The watchdog query (status RUNNING + startedAt < now-15m) uses the status index — fine at MVP scale; a partial index is a Phase-15 optimization (noted).
API Changes
- New runs endpoints per §6 (list/detail/retry) — documented in
docs/api/automations.md(run JSON shape = the TASK-0114 UI contract).
Tests
- Unit: state machine, backoff schedule, truncation, emission rule.
- Integration: all Acceptance Criteria scenarios in
tests/integration/automation-pipeline.spec.ts(SIGKILL crash test via child-process worker in the test harness — isolated, time-boxed 3 min).
Security
- Run detail/list restricted to automation EDIT permission (run data includes record values + webhook payloads — treated as confidential).
- Log redaction (TASK-0112 header names) applied in the log writer centrally — no executor can bypass it.
- Retry endpoint permission-checked; retrying a DEAD_LETTER run is audited
(
automation.run_retried, actor). - Worker crash recovery must not double-execute non-idempotent side effects more than the documented per-executor retry semantics allow (email idempotency key asserted in the happy-path test).
Documentation
docs/api/automations.mdaddendum: runs API + run JSON + retry semantics.docs/architecture/automation.mdpart 4: pipeline design, state machine diagram, backoff/dead-letter policy, loop-prevention proof sketch, watchdog, crash-safety notes + known limits (non-idempotent executor retry caveats).
Dependencies

TASK-0114
Title
Automation editor UI + execution history UI + Phase-11 E2E/safety suite
Objective
Deliver the user-facing half of Phase 11: the workspace-settings Automations section (list + detail + history with step logs + enable/pause + Run now) and the create/edit dialog (trigger picker with per-type config, nested condition builder, ordered action list with per-type config forms, retries/timeout, dry-run preview in dev) — plus the E2E + safety suite that proves the phase exit criteria.
Background
The engine is complete (TASKS-0110…0113): CRUD + sub-resource PUTs,
conditions, executors, runs API (GET .../runs, GET .../runs/:runId,
POST .../runs/:runId/retry), manual run (POST .../run), incoming
webhook secret shown-once. Workspace settings live in Phase 2
(apps/web/src/app/(workspace)/settings/ — a new Automations section
tab). @factory/shared/automation.ts holds the trigger/condition/action
schemas + ACTIONS metadata (display names/icons) + TRIGGERS metadata —
the UI renders forms FROM this metadata (single source of truth, no
duplicated type lists). Status pills: DRAFT (gray), ACTIVE (green),
PAUSED (amber), ARCHIVED (muted).
Requirements
- Automations section (settings → Automations): list (name, scope chip (workspace / database name), first trigger type + summary, status pill, last-run status dot + time, created-by avatar); toolbar: "New automation" (primary), search filter, status filter; empty state ("No automations yet" + create button + a 3-example starter card: "When a record is created → set Status", "When a form is submitted → notify owner", "Daily → send summary email" — clicking a starter pre-fills the editor). Row click → detail view.
- Detail view: header (name, status pill, enable/pause toggle — for DRAFT: "Activate" button; PAUSED: "Resume"; ARCHIVED: "Restore"), tabs: Overview (trigger summary card, condition summary in plain language ("Only when Priority equals High AND Status is not Done"), action list summary with type icons), History (below).

truncated view), each action step as a timeline item (icon, type,
status, duration, expandable output JSON + error JSON), the log stream
(time, level color, message, data JSON collapsible — redacted values
shown as

on one scroll — Notion-style stack):
(a) Name + description + scope select ("Whole workspace" / a database —
database select filtered to databases the user can EDIT; changing scope

- Preview/dry-run (dev only,
NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_AUTOMATION_DRYRUN=trueorNODE_ENV !== "production"): in the editor, "Preview with sample record" — picks the first record of the scoped database (or a synthesized one if none), shows: which trigger matched (fixed: the selected trigger), condition evaluation result with each predicate's true/false highlight (calls a test-only preview endpointPOST /api/v1/automations/:id/preview—NODE_ENV=test/dev gated — that runs TASK-0111's evaluator read-only, NO actions executed), and a dry-run of each action (executors called with adryRun: trueflag added to the executor interface in this task: real executors perform ALL validation + read steps but skip the write/emit and return{ dryRun: true, would: <description> }; SEND_WEBHOOK dry-run shows the exact request that would be sent). Dry-run results render in the drawer with per-step ✓/✗. - Run now: detail-view button (any status except ARCHIVED) → confirm
(shows "Runs with no trigger event; conditions that reference the
trigger record will not match" when the automation is record-scoped) →
POST .../run→ toast with run link → history tab shows the new run (poll the run endpoint 2 s × 30 s for the live status transition, then settle). - States/a11y: loading skeletons (list, history), empty states (list,
history for a never-run automation: "No runs yet"), error banners +
retry (runs fetch), 429 on heavy polling (backoff 5 s); keyboard:
editor is fully tab-navigable, condition builder rows are
role="group"with labelled controls, drawer is focus-trapped with Esc close, status pills have text (not color-only), live region announces run status changes.
Acceptance Criteria
- E2E (
tests/e2e/automation.spec.ts, scenario "exit criterion: record- created → status change < 10 s"): owner creates a Board database with a STATUS "Status" (To Do/In Progress/Done) + SELECT "Priority"; creates an automation (UI): trigger RECORD_CREATED on that database, no conditions, action CHANGE_STATUS Status → "In Progress"; save and activate; opens the board in a second tab; creates a record via the board UI (add row, title "Auto Test"); polls the record via the API every 500 ms → Status = "In Progress" within 10 s; the automation's history tab shows the run SUCCEEDED with a CHANGE_STATUS step; arecord.updatedevent fired (visible as a second run for a test RECORD_UPDATED automation if added — optional assert). - E2E: condition gate — automation with condition
"Priority equals High" (built via the nested builder UI): create record
with Priority High → Status changed; create record with Priority Low →
run exists, status SUCCEEDED, output
skipped: conditions_not_met, Status unchanged (asserted via API poll). - E2E: schedule — SCHEDULE trigger with cron
*/1 * * * *? no — minimum 60 s: use* * * * *via the UI (60 s accepted; < 60 s rejected with inline error — assert the rejection case too); activate, wait ≤ 65 s → a scheduled run appears in history with trigger type "schedule". - E2E (exit criterion: 8× retry → dead-letter): automation SEND_WEBHOOK
to
http://127.0.0.1:1/(refused; the SSRF guard allows 127.0.0.1 in dev? — NO: the guard blocks 127/8. Use the test-local targethttp://dead.invalid(DNS failure = retryable) configured via a dev override envAUTOMATIONS_WEBHOOK_ALLOW_PRIVATE=truein the E2E profile ONLY — documented); trigger manually (Run now); within ~3 min the run shows DEAD_LETTER with retryCount 8 (backoff in dev compressed via envAUTO_BACKOFF_BASE_MS=100for E2E — test-only env, documented); the owner's notifications contain the dead-letter alert; Retry button resets the run. - E2E (safety: self-trigger): automation A (RECORD_CREATED → UPDATE_RECORD setting Priority); create a record → exactly one run for A (assert via runs API: count = 1 after 15 s); automation B (PROPERTY_CHANGED on Priority → CREATE_NOTIFICATION) fires once at depth 1 (chain works); A's own update never re-fires A.
- E2E: pause stops execution — active automation, pause it, create a record → no new run within 15 s (count unchanged); resume → fires.
- E2E: run history shows all steps — the 3-action run from the first
scenario: drawer shows 3 timeline items with outputs, the log stream
has ≥ 7 entries, error-free; a deliberately failing action (SEND_WEBHOOK
to a 400 server) shows the error JSON +
WEBHOOK_REJECTEDcode. - Editor unit/integration: condition builder produces a valid expression
(save succeeds; server accepts); 5-level nesting blocked with inline
warning; WEBHOOK trigger shows the secret once, "I have copied it"
gates save (unchecking → save disabled); dry-run (dev flag) on a
condition-gated automation highlights the failing predicate and lists
would:results without side effects (assert no record created). - Mobile (390 px): list + detail usable (editor is desktop-first: min-width message on < 640 px — acceptable, documented).
Backend Changes
POST /api/v1/automations/:id/preview(dev/test-gated): body{ triggerIndex?, sampleRecordId? }→ runs matcher simulation for the selected trigger + condition evaluation + executor dry-runs; response{ triggerMatched, conditions: { result, predicates: [{ path, result }] }, actions: [{ index, type, dryRun: true, would, output? }] }; no writes, no events, no queue jobs. API Changes
- New (dev-gated):
POST /api/v1/automations/:id/preview. Runs endpoints consumed (TASK-0113). Contract addendum indocs/api/automations.md.
Tests
- Unit: condition-builder model (tree construction/serialization matching the server schema), cron preview text generator, interpolation popup model, status pill/mapping tables, editor validation (stub-action activation warning logic).
- Integration: preview endpoint (read-only proof: DB snapshots before/ after a dry-run are identical), test-only envs honored.
- E2E: all 8 scenarios in Acceptance Criteria in
tests/e2e/automation.spec.ts(time-boxed: backoff compression + 60 s cron make the suite < 10 min).
Security
- The preview endpoint executes condition evaluation + executor VALIDATION read paths with a hard no-write flag — proven by the snapshot test; gated out of production builds.
- Webhook secret UX: shown once, copy-gated save, regeneration warns — the UI never re-fetches a secret (the API can't; the UI is consistent).
AUTOMATIONS_WEBHOOK_ALLOW_PRIVATEis dev/test-only (boot error in production if set — the SSRF guard remains absolute in prod).- Run data (record values, webhook payloads) is only visible to automation EDIT holders (UI + API consistent).
Documentation
